Glowworm is the value brand of the Vaillant Group, and that parentage matters: a Glowworm boiler shares many of the same components, the same Derbyshire factory and the same engineering team as the much pricier Vaillant ecoTEC. For homeowners who want German-Group engineering at British-budget prices, it's the smart pick.

The Vaillant connection nobody talks about

Glowworm has been making boilers in Belper, Derbyshire since 1934. In 2001 the brand was acquired by Vaillant Group, the German heating giant, and today the two ranges are designed and built side-by-side at the same Derbyshire factory. What this means for customers is significant: a Glowworm Energy combi shares its core heat exchanger geometry, its fan, its gas valve and many of its electronic components with a Vaillant ecoTEC plus — but typically sells for £400–£600 less fully fitted. There's a small trade-off in casing finish (Glowworm uses lighter-gauge steel), warranty length (10 years vs Vaillant's 12) and smart-thermostat polish, but mechanically you're buying very similar engineering. For a customer who wants Vaillant-quality internals on a Baxi-level budget, Glowworm is genuinely hard to beat.

Energy and Energy7 — choosing the right one

The mainstream Energy range offers a full spec with OpenTherm-modulating controls, a bright display and a 10-year guarantee when fitted with a Glowworm system filter. The Energy7, despite the name, is the latest generation with refined heat-exchanger geometry, faster hot-water response and full smart-thermostat compatibility via the MiSet thermostat. Outputs include 25, 30 and 35 kW, which covers virtually every domestic application from a 1-bed flat to a 4-bed family home.

Best for clever buyers

We recommend Glowworm to value-focused customers who've done their research, understand the Vaillant connection, and want premium-group engineering without paying the premium-brand price. The downsides are honest ones: the casing isn't as solid-feeling as Vaillant or Worcester, the smart-thermostat ecosystem is functional but plain, and the 10-year guarantee, while good, isn't 12. But on a £/year cost-of-ownership basis, a Glowworm Energy 30 kW is one of the smartest buys on the UK market in 2026.
